THE PROJECT

Project overview.

Villa Hermosa replaces the former Fred Young Farm Labor Center’s 253 homes in Indio. Established in the 1930s for single migrant farmworkers, the center first used one-room wooden buildings; replacement buildings from the 1960s had no heating or air conditioning. Coachella Valley Housing Coalition took over the occupied property in 2007 and began planning its reconstruction.

Existing residents were offered homes in the new one-, two-, three-, and four-bedroom apartments. Pools, community gardens, playgrounds, and weekday children’s programs support family life within a design suited to the desert setting.

The LEED Platinum design emphasizes efficient energy and water use, material and resource conservation, and indoor environmental quality.
